There are large mass of wetlands around my city Guwahati. These wetlands are called Deepor Beel which has been listed as a lake in November 2002, under the Ramsar Convention. Deepor Beel is one of the largest mass of wetland in the Brahmaputra Valley in Lower Assam.
The human habitat living around the wetland use the lake for fishing, transportation from one end to another using locally made boats, and to collect fodder for cattle. The stretch of land around the lake is used for cultivation.
A threat to the existence of the lake is from the groups of picnickers who come here every winter and disturb the environment. The above picture is a warning for poachers and people who disturb the eco-system in the lake of heavy penalties that awaits when one break the system.

The Goalpara link rail track passes through the edge of the lake and often cause hazards to the wildlife moving around the lakes. These are the Elephants that move around near this lake.
The photograph shows a couple using a locally made boat to cross-over from one end to another part around the lake.
Huge plantations of Teak wood is seen around the lake. Medicinal plants are also found in abundance around the lake. This is an ideal site for picnic.
Among other threat is the flow of liquid waste from the main land city to the lake. Measure are being put up to filter the waste material before it flows to the lake, by environmental organisations.
