Some news about the Oasis of Alviano

1-What is the Oasis of Alviano?
It's an artificial lake, obtained from the barrage on the Tiber. today, the lake is largely marshland, rich with life, especially birds.
The artificial lake is 900 acres and it was created by the construction of the dam on the river Tiber and the construction of a hydroelectric plant.
After a while, the sediments transported by the river and retained by the lake, gave rise to small inland delta with formations of wooded swamps.
This was favorable to the arrival of waterfowl (ducks, geese, herons, cormorants). From 1983 to 1994 a watchtower and an observatory have been built on two floors to allow the execution of educational activities.
2-Who lives there?
There are about more than 150 species of birds. Thank to the diversity of environments-(flora includes marsh yellow iris, sedge, bulrush, common reed) -, many species of birds, both migratory and sedentary, are present during the time of year, with peaks in the autumn of 1000 birds. You can see the bittern, the Water Rail, the Common Moorhen, the Common Coot, the Great Cormorant. In shallow water there is the Great Egret, the Grey, the Grey Heron, the Mallard, the Teal.
3-Who are the migratory birds?
During the periods of migration, the lake gives hospitality to the black-winged stilt, the osprey and the glossy ibis. There are many passerines too, in particular the siskin that feeds on the seeds of alder and the thrushes, which like the berries of ivy.
Among the mammals living in the Oasis, we can meet foxes, badgers, crested porcupines, hedgehogs, wild boar and, recently, the European Red Squirrel.
